

You can delete bones that you don't need, i.e. You then just have to place the bones inside your character so it would represent that characters skeletton.

You can achieve this by checking X-Axis Mirror in the Armature tab on the left side of the screen when in edit mode while having the rig selected. It is advised to activate x-mirror though, since your initial humanoid is also x-mirrored. If you click on the rig and go to edit mode you can shift or rotate the rig around by grabbing the cubes or spheres. You'll notice that the bones are made up out of are cubes with spheres at the end. Essentially, this will let you skip the process of building up a skeletton by hand using single bones. This is a humanoid skeleton that has rigging-bones for every major bone in the human body. If you then add a new object (shift a), under armature you'll notice that Human (Meta-Rig) will be available now. The best way to rig humanoid characters is to use the rigify addon which you can check under file->user preferences->addon->rigging
